This time of year is expensive if you have children in school!  School supplies, new shoes, new clothes, backpack, doctor visits, medical exams for sports, money in the lunch account, extra school supplies for the classroom, lab fees, book fees, and everything else.  Looking for ways to save here and there, shopping at Goodwill sure does help the budget!

We found a GAP cotton crew sweater and HOLLISTER skirt … both in perfect condition!

So Preppy so Pink! Polo and JCREW ~ Thrift Store Style

So Preppy so Pink! Polo and JCREW ~ Thrift Store Style

Now maybe it is my age but I grew up being enthralled with “preppy”.  My grandma would get the Lillian Vernon catalog and that was my Preppy Bible!  Remember we did not have the internet, the TV shows were more like “Bewitched” or “I Dream of Jeannie”.   One of the hottest movies was “The Breakfast Club” and James Spader was ALL THAT!

james spader pinterest

Unfortunately it wasn’t in my budget and you couldn’t really find these items in a thrift store … if I would have only known about “recreating” an outfit from a magazine or catalog.

I was so excited when I found this pair of JCREW chino shorts for my daughter @ San Antonio Goodwill for only $2.99 (retail $45) and to complete the outfit, I found this pink, sleeveless POLO shirt for $3.99.  (retails $89.50) … let me say that I almost fell over when she said “Yes, I will wear pink!”.  A grand total of $6.98 from GOODWILL .. how awesome is that!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Husband … Happy Life!

Happy Husband … Happy Life!

Texas summer heat is unbearable and being my husband works outdoors most of the time, I agreed to a small A/C wall unit in the master bedroom so we  could get our room super, super freezing cold!

“Pippa, it will just be a small opening that will go over in the corner”

I am in SHOCK!

I am in SHOCK!

I walked into my room and was in complete shock when I saw an enormous hole in the wall!   The first thought that went through my mind was “I am the best wife in the world”  Then I realized that we will have the front grill of a FORD truck sitting in our bedroom    🙁

This will be sticking out of the wall

This will be sticking out of the wall

In my opinion this is what will be sitting in our bedroom!

In my opinion this is what will be sitting in our bedroom!

Then I had the epiphany “Happy Husband, Happy Life”.  I know, I know, it is supposed to be “Happy Wife, Happy Life”.   Life is just better when both the husband and the wife are happy!

BE HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!

Summer Cruising with the Family ~ Part II

Summer Cruising with the Family ~ Part II

Thrift store shopping is a great way to save money during the year so we can spend it on fun things!  This summer for our family vacation we went on a cruise to Mexico.   It was wonderful to laugh and create memories together.

Thrifting is a major part of everyone’s wardrobe and most of the clothes in these pictures were purchased at Goodwill.  Believe me, it is always an adventure to shop with the girls, to see what they pick out and develop their own personal style.   Perfect summer attire is t-shirts / jean shorts and fairly easy to find at Goodwill.

Remember to always thrift with style and have fun doing it!

Summer Cruising with the Family! Part I

Summer Cruising with the Family!
We started our summer with a family cruise, what a great way to reconnect with all the kids … the 2 older girls just finished their first year of college and life sure gets busy with 4 teenagers!
All four of my children have been so supportive of thrifting and helping with modeling for many of the 30 television segments that Jen and I “Too Cheap Blondes” have done this past year on ABC, Stretch your Dollar, Houston Check this out!, FOX,  Livewell Network Mirror/Mirror and Deals.
Most of the clothes they wore during our vacation, they picked out at a thrift store and it sure does help the budget!
I have met people who are ashamed about thrift store shopping, I am so proud that the kids have learned not only the value of a dollar, creating their own style and by supporting Goodwill they are helping to create jobs in our local community.

That funky piece of ART …. what are You?

That funky piece of ART …. What are You?

I recently did a fashion show with Goodwill in San Antonio.  What a completely fun and fabulous day that I got to spend with a few other spectacular bloggers Pam Lutrell (Over50feeling40) and Agosto Cuellar (www.jiverefried.blogspot.com).   I will share more of both behind the scenes and the fashion next week.

Kens 5 TV SAN ANTONIO — Shoes, shirts and skirts were flouncing away at the Goodwill WORK IT! Fashion show Saturday.

“We wanted to show folks there are great treasures to be found on every rack and every shelf here at Goodwill and that all it takes it a little creativity and a little imagination to put some fabulous finds together,” said Penny Benavidez with Goodwill.

It was more than just fashion getting a second chance.

“Every dollar, every donation is help us fund the many educational programs and services that assist people in finding jobs and building careers,” Benavidez said.

Fashion bloggers Pippa Williams, Agosto Cuellar and Pam Lutrell helped coordinate the outfits.

“This is awesome, I want to teach people how to thrift,” Williams said. “So for pennies on the dollar, I’ll take a look from Pinterest and recreate it.”

Cuellar said Goodwill is an essential resource for fashion artists.

“Goodwill has been a big part of what I’ve been doing my entire life as an artist: creating and remixing garments,” Cuellar said. “So I think that Goodwill is a supplier on a lot of artist that are on a budget. You can actual experiment. If it doesn’t go the way you want it to go, give it another shot because Goodwill is filled with stuff.”

My "artsy" find @ Goodwill

My “artsy” find @ Goodwill

The whole day was focused on making the show a success (and it was!).   At the end of the day I slipped off my heels and put on my flip flops, ready for a nap ….. wait …. this funky piece of ART caught my eye as I was walking out of Goodwill!   I bought it as a reminder as my first fashion show … I have to say that I am completely in love with the imperfection and lumpiness of this vase.   Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.  My mom thought it was a bit rustic (if I remember correctly, she called it Ugly).  When she saw it on my kitchen island with my other “artsy” vases,  she had to admit its unique characteristics made it seem beautiful and fit in perfectly!

Regardless of your imperfections and lumps, there is a place for you in life.  You might not know where that path will lead you but follow the doors that open and bloom where you are planted!

Shopping Thrift Stores: Should I get that item?

Shopping Thrift Stores:   Should I get that item?

How many times have you found a fabulous item at a thrift store that you just aren’t sure what to do with or if you will wear it or what to wear it with?

or even a small stain (I will share my secret that works 9 out of 10 times!)

“How to style a fabulous thrift store find?” …

I found this curtain panel for $2.99 and I wasn’t sure what it would look like as a table cloth.  I typed in “blue white tablecloth” in Pinterest and found this … I LOVE IT!

This curtain panel was $2.99 and I use it as a table cloth!

Here is a “boho” style blouse for $3.99.   Its not really my style, I thought my daughter might like it so I typed in “boho top”.

Oh yes ….. now for my secret formula to remove stains 9 times out of 10.

I pick up awesome clothes at thrift stores and I am not afraid of a stain (which is usually why the item was donated).   I put Dawn on overnight and it is amazing!

How many times have you come across a super ugly dress, or the wrong size blouse or pants at a thrift store, but darn they are made out of great fabric!    Of course I always put it in my cart, pushing it around the entire time, hoping I can think of a way to make this item work for me … ha ha!    Now I have found the perfect solution … make a Bow Bracelet!
